This Week's Note

Run the Mutt

Is how I refer to my tendency to complete self-supported fun runs, sub as little as possible when I play Ultimate Frisbee, write as many articles as a I can, design one off ideas, or green-light various projects that will probably never return on investment.

“Run the Mutt” is, in other words, how I give myself permission to do the sorts of things I think are exciting, or fun, or too interesting to ignore. Run the Mutt is how I find myself with way too many side projects to complete even though no one is asking me to join their team or help them ship their product. Run the Mutt is how I’ve created an archive of meaningful work that I actually believe in. Run the Mutt is how I have a great time exercising when Tuesday night frisbee or Friday morning runs come around. Run the Mutt is how I honor my innate sense of intrigue and curiosity.

And thankfully, I’m not the only one with a mutt that needs to be ran. We all have a wild side that deserves to be indulged. We all have an innate sense of intrigue and curiosity that should be honored. We all occasionally find ourselves completely wrapped up in the moment—during which stepping off the field is simply not an option.

Unfortunately, most of us forget about our wild side. We forget about our inner mutt and in doing so teach ourselves to be content with barking at the delivery person as opposed to chasing squirrels or sniffing bushes. And after enough time spent staring out the window or being tied to a leash, we forget that freedom, that libertas is even a conceivable possibility.

Run the Mutt is not an excuse to be reckless, or rude, or an on-ramp for regretful decision making. Its a reminder to take a bite out of life as opposed to simply barking from the side line. And while its possible to find ourselves running down the wrong path, if we let our inner mutt, as opposed to our ego or culture guide our path, I think we’ll eventually find our way back home. Or, better yet, among a pack of equally untamed and unabashed street dogs.

This Week's Resource

A book recommendation.

If you like Sci-Fi and world building, then there's no reason you wouldn't love Portia, and Adrian Tchaikovsky's Children of Time
