The Point of a Journal and Vulfpeck Live

This Week's Note

The Point of a Journal

Can be to reference or archive. Sometimes I look back at old sketches and inevitably use what I’ve rediscovered to influence new projects, and sometimes I need to create a truly offline record, but Ive come to realize that these are the edge cases, the exception to the rule.

I think the point of a journal, the reason why so many of us come back to these gridded, dotted, ruled, or blank pages is because they provide us with an immutable and ultra-accessible platform. A place where we can truly be ourselves. A place where we can explore whatever idea comes to mind. A place where the limitations of living in a “society” pass us by. A place where we get to truly become self-determinant. A place to write, to draw, to sketch, to record, to explore, to cry, to feel to remember, to forget, to give life to our fleeting sparks.

In other words, we come back to our tattered journals and stubby pencils to give our ideas the time and attention they deserve.

What’s more, I think we’ve all internalized that our online platforms are mutable. Our digital footprint can be hacked, stolen, taken, or deleted at the press of a button. Whereas regardless of what we say, draw, record, note, sketch, or glue to the page, our journals can’t (and won’t) tell us to leave. They can’t uproot our footprint. They can’t be hacked, or taken offline, or stolen—at least not with the press of a button.

When viewed in this light, we see that journals are not outdated or outclassed by their digital peers. No, journals are still among the most technologically advanced creations we’ve made, and when we accept their often overlooked opportunity we gain access to what is simultaneously the most accessible, private, and inspiring platform we’ve ever encountered.
