Something For You and a Charming Weather Website
This Week's Note
Something For You
Most artists would agree that devoting a share of their resources to third-party projects can be intrinsically valuable. Sadly, it’s often the case that artists find themselves working solely on projects that push someone else's agenda. Trading away time to work on their manuscript to edit someone else's blog. Pausing progress on their website to meet a client’s deadline. Refusing to plant a garden to help a neighbor plant theirs.
Even though there is beauty in sacrificing for the sake of others, it’s feasible for two (seemingly conflicting) things to be true. We can simultaneously value generously collaborating on third-party projects, and prioritize (and fiercely guard) our fidelity to publish our own work.
It’s important to consider how much capacity we have for first-party projects because as artists, the health of our creative practice greatly impacts everything else we become a part of. To borrow a metaphor, it's important that we secure our oxygen-masks so we can meaningfully help secure the oxygen-masks of others.
While some people can devote the majority of their resources to third-party objectives, others will need to allocate enough capacity to consistently work on projects of their own. Wherever we fall on the spectrum, remembering to make something for you (even if it's every now and then) is never a bad idea.
When we allow our ideas to be sparks (that in all likelihood won’t ignite a fire) we can allocate our expensive stores of time and capacity to the ones that seem most likely to grow.
