Self-Supported and Logo Lounge

This Week's Note

Self-Supported

There are many ways to approach running, but the self supported genre has always managed to hold my focus and spark my imagination. Besides their ability to help participants discover whether or not they find intrinsic joy from running itself, self supported runs allow our lone-pine tendencies to be safely exercised. While there are inherent risks associated with solo trail runs, or single-participant marathons, restricting our desire to go alone to our hobbies is, in the long run, much safer.

Finding a space to achieve our goals without the assistance of others is important because without it, many of us choose to flex our “self-reliance muscles” in the wrong arenas. We self support through our careers, we self support through the development of our marriage, we self support through shaping our futures. Without a safe bucket to indulge our desire to go off alone, we find ourselves (in the areas where it matters most) championing self supported strategies and inevitably leave the wisdom, love, and guidance of our supporters on the table.

When given an appropriate vessel, being self supported is fun. Scheming a way to achieve our goals in lieu of externalities can be exhilarating. Fortunately, a life well-lived inevitably means that we’ll need to help co-cultivate nourishing communities.

We’ve been told the mavericks who through their own merit achieve their dreams are the people we should mimic. In reality, there’s nothing particularly noteworthy about isolating ourselves from the greatest joys life has to offer. In efforts of creating a rich, vibrant, lived experience it is probably best to leave the idea of being self-supported to our onerous and (probably) dangerous adventure runs.
